The latest insights on re-engineering work for AI

We've seen it before. A promising initiative starts with excitement but gets derailed by poor execution. The same risk exists with AI. As people leaders, we're all for bold, transformative change. But taking the first steps into uncharted territory can be terrifying. The fear of making mistakes sometimes holds us back from acting at all.

So how do we ensure AI enhances our workforce without losing the human touch? Having done a few laps around the sun, both in my life and my business, I can confidently say the answer isn't choosing between humans and AI. It's about integrating AI in a way that complements our people. It lets them do meaningful work.

We explored AI automation extensively. We developed AI workers capable of performing many tasks faster and more cost-effectively than hiring employees. In some instances, where we fully automated tasks, we've reintroduced them into our workflows. Employees now handle them.

Certain tasks, like writing emails to customers, require a human touch. They need creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Remember: we're all at the beginning of this journey. Treat your company as if it's day zero. Continuously experiment and adapt.

Be bold: adopt AI to amplify human potential and create impact

AI isn't here to eliminate jobs. It's here to evolve them. Integrating AI into the workplace isn't about making humans obsolete. It's about giving them room to do more.

During the Industrial Revolution, machines in factories sparked widespread fear. Workers believed innovations would lead to mass unemployment. The Luddites, a group of English textile workers, famously destroyed machinery in protest. They were convinced these devices would render their skills obsolete.

However, machines changed the nature of work. They also created new jobs, industries, and opportunities for growth. The economy evolved. The workforce adapted to new systems and technologies. AI today reshapes how we work. Not to replace jobs. To open doors to new possibilities.

If I automate chaos, I just scale the chaos.

To make AI your competitive advantage:

  1. Ensure everyone understands AI and its associated risks.
  2. Analyze where AI provides the best ROI and impact. Break your jobs into tasks and outcomes.
  3. Cross-reference AI opportunities with areas of highest cost or pain.
  4. Decide whether to build in-house AI or use existing technology. Consider data needs and capabilities.
  5. Invest strategically. Keep a clear understanding of timelines and expected ROI.
  6. Implement a "land, expand, explode" approach. Start small, test, pivot as needed. Then scale for broader adoption.

Bold actions lay the foundation. But to truly lead, these actions need thoughtful, responsible implementation.

Be responsible: implement AI thoughtfully for long-term success

Bold steps are crucial. Thoughtful execution ensures sustainability. It's not enough to just implement AI. We need to do it in a way that maintains our commitment to our workforce.

  1. Analyze jobs and tasks. Evaluate current roles and responsibilities. Understand how emerging technologies, including AI, impact them. Research effects on today's workforce. Also consider the jobs and skills in demand over the next decade.
  2. Communicate transparently. If you implement AI that automatically creates profiles for every worker, keep communication open and honest. Regularly update employees on how AI enhances their careers and supports them. Transparency builds trust and reduces fear.
  3. Engage employees early. Involve employees from the start. Seek their input and feedback on AI initiatives. Host workshops and discussions. This improves implementation and builds buy-in and acceptance.
  4. Set ethical guidelines. Establish a baseline: only work with AI systems that have been independently audited. Independent audits ensure objectivity and fairness. They identify and correct biases in AI systems. Anything less is just marking your own homework. Our independently audited Ethical AI received recognition from the World Economic Forum as a 2022 Technology Pioneer. Such standards safeguard fairness and transparency. They reinforce the need for human oversight in AI decisions. Especially in areas that directly impact people's lives and careers.
  5. Prioritize training based on AI opportunities. Proactively identify where AI applies in your organization. Understand the new opportunities it creates. Communicate clearly and honestly with employees. Launch a work movement marketplace. Ensure they can reskill and pivot. Get ahead of this so everyone has access to meaningful work.
  6. Turn your company into a reskilling powerhouse. Understand AI's impacts on jobs today. Plan for the future. Equip employees with the skills they need. Ensure they can adapt and thrive as new technologies arrive.

By blending bold innovation with responsible implementation, we ensure AI enhances work. It enriches the very human experience that is work. This is about leading with both courage and compassion. AI should support every member of our businesses, people, and societies.

Savage Take: AI won't replace your job. But someone using AI will.
