See AI Work Design in action

The platform top Fortune 100 companies use to redesign how people and agents work together. Watch it now.

How Medtronic’s Abby Rich is building internal expertise to redesign work and help people succeed alongside AI.

Abby sees work redesign as expertise an organization needs to own. As technology changes, people need a team that understands the work, can rethink it and can help them succeed in new roles and responsibilities.

Her approach starts with the outcomes a role needs to deliver. From there, she examines the tasks, where they belong and where human judgment matters, before deciding how technology should contribute.

Working with Reejig gives her team the work data to make those decisions. It also helps reveal where to invest in human expertise and where similar tasks could open different career pathways.

HR’s own transformation helped build executive confidence in this approach. Her ambition is to turn that experience into an ongoing practice across Medtronic.

The transformation story

How Medtronic started with HR to build the expertise to redesign work

Connect AI tools to people’s work

Tools and prompt training left employees asking how AI fitted into their roles. Abby saw the need to understand the work itself before deciding where agents and technology belonged.

Use Reejig to examine the work

The team used Reejig’s work data to examine tasks and outcomes within roles, considering what belonged in shared services, with business partners or with AI before designing the technology around it.

Turn HR’s experience into internal expertise

HR’s transformation gave executive peers confidence to explore changes in their own functions. Meeting that demand meant developing an internal team that could keep redesigning work.

“HR’s experience gave other leaders confidence to explore redesigning their own work.”
Identify where people can grow

Seeing similar tasks across different roles opened conversations about upskilling, reskilling and less traditional career pathways.

“What are the human elements of a role that need to remain uniquely human?”
What’s next: define what happens with time gained

Abby is setting clear expectations and workflow-level measures. When AI changes the work, leaders need to explain the new outcomes people should deliver and how time gained will be reinvested.

What other leaders can take from this

Lessons for leaders

01
Start with what the role must achieve
Outcomes first, then tasks, then where technology fits.
02
Treat consultants as a bridge
Work will never stop changing, so the redesign capability needs to live inside the organization.
03
Decide what freed-up time is for
Without clear expectations, productivity gains simply turn into more meetings.

We needed to partner with you all at Reejig to have the data to understand work within a family group, and then a role group, and then a specific role, to understand what is the work that’s actually happening?
